| Tesla's Coil Unraveling by Joella March |
Statement by "Energy" Juror Howard N. Fox: Energy is all. According to the Book of Genesis, the creation began in a burst of pure energy – light. According to Einstein, energy is the source of all matter, and convertible with it. According to most artists, creative energy – an inner force – is the motivation of their lives. In the studio artists transform creative energy into material expression. For this exhibition artists were encouraged to submit works that celebrate the concept or force of energy in its broadest connotations or in its most focused denotations.
In the grand scheme of "things are what you make of them" Joy, Will and I went down to the Santa Ana Artwalk with the idea that we were going to lift our collective spirits with art, food, wine and friends. Which, is exactly what we did.
Will has been out of town and I've been working non-stop to launch the second month of Colectiva, the gallery's summer group show, which is incredible and can be viewed online, so it was nice for us all to reconnect over a bottle of wine (espresso for Will, the dd). We were joined by artist and curator Joella March who created the piece at the top entitle "Tesla's Coil Unraveling." It is a visual deconstruction of Tesla's idealic vision of a renewable energy source. I just fell in love with the piece and I'm excited to say it was created by a dear friend so that when Will and I get a larger living space we can commission one just like it!
Artwalk in Santa Ana is always a great time. I hadn't been in a while so it was exciting to see food trucks, and live music and people spilling out of the Grand Central Art Building and all the surrounding restaurants. It is a relatively small area and centrally located so the atomosphere never gets diluted or split between one side of town or the other. The exhibit "Energy" at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art is a definite "go see."
