plastic nostalgia: raw edges design studio

Raw Edges are inspired by the specific design language of Fisher Price Toys from the 1970's.  Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay have chosen one of the ultimate symbols of high quality, brightly coloured, highly finished plastic, which during theirs and many childhoods typified homes across the world.  Fisher Price toys with their plastic properties of durability and myriad shape and colour possibilities were seen on every nursery floor, a positive symbol of a plastic manufacturing age.

Raw Edge Design Studio

Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay make up Raw Edges Design Studio and I discovered their amazing work while doing a little nolstalgic research of my own into Fisher Price toys. What I enjoy the most about this series in particular (although all their work is amazing) is the pre-industrial craftsmanship expressing mass-production whimsy, reworked to be functional in an adult capacity. It is very inspirational in planning out what I want in the home I am pulling together with my boyfriend.

Here is my secret: I want to surprise him by building a small collection of different phonographs and tape playing devices designed originally for kids. Our apartment, while very beautiful, is lacking a certain warmth. There is a lot of hard wood and furniture made up of a collection of 90 degree angles. It was my taste when I was living alone, sharp angles, boxy leather, and glass but lately I've been wanting to lounge around like a cat on big soft things and look up at bright bursts of color. We are both very silly around each other and I see no reason why our apartment shouldn't be equally so. In addition to finding audiotoys I am on the lookout for the perfect lounging and listening to records carpet and GIANT floor pillows.  Lighting is important too. I'm thinking one of those projector universe machines should do the trick.
